Merton Park is about a mile from our yard, so it's one of the areas we're in most often. It's also one of the few round here where the fence you put up matters beyond your own garden — a large part of Merton Park is a designated conservation area, laid out with hedges, low boundaries and a deliberately open feel.
That's worth knowing before you order six feet of closeboard. In a conservation area the permitted-development rules that normally let you put up a 2m fence out of sight of the road can be tightened, and boundary treatments to the front are the ones most likely to be restricted.
